Arkitsa is a coastal settlement of the prefecture of Fthiotida with an altitude of 40 m. and a population of 840 inhabitants according to the Greek Census 2011. It is a recognized tourist resort, known for its beaches with clean waters and its environment. It is located in the southeastern part of the prefecture, on the coast of the former Lokrida Province on the North Evian Gulf. Administratively, it is the seat of the homonymous local community of the Municipality of Lokron, with its seat in Atalanti. It is 10 km from Atalanti and 150 km from Athens. Its port connects by ferryboat Central Greece with North Evia (Arkitsa - Loutra Edipsos) and is very busy all year round.
Antiquity
Before the Mycenaean period, the area witnessed the destruction of settlements, stagnation, a return to agriculture and cultural isolation due to the possible invasion of Greek tribes from Thessaly.
During the Mycenaean period, the inhabitants were engaged in fishing, animal husbandry and agriculture (wheat, cereals, pulses, olives, grapes, wine).
In the Early Geometric period (10th century-8th century BC) there was a change in burial customs, influences on art from Attica, Corinth, Evia and Thessaly, mass production of vases and a boom in metallurgy (weapons and gold jewellery). Society at this time is multi-class with different occupations of the representatives of the social hierarchy, and the position of women is high and important within it.
The people's occupation with trade and shipping resulted in the emergence of a wealthy class, the bourgeoisie.
Alopi and Throne in the first year of the Peloponnesian War (431-430) were occupied by the Athenian general Cleopompo of Cleinius[8], which means that the city existed in the classical era. Apart from Locrian Alopi, there were other cities of the same name, as mentioned by Stephanos Byzantius.
All the settlements of Locri Alopi were coastal, their inhabitants were farmers, merchants and sailors, and the social organization was hierarchical. Influences from the rest of mainland Greece and the islands are evident in various occupations of the inhabitants, but mainly in ceramic art.
